Make It Monday 10/29/2012

I was away on a personal quilting retreat by the ocean part of last week. Here are a couple of pictures of what I worked on while I was there:

Pick Up Stix from the book Quilters Playtime

Blocks were partially made, finally figured out they were from the book Thinking Outside the Block, which I had left behind.

Also this week I made these Halloween candy bags for my granddaughters:
Minnie Mouse     Daphne from Scooby Doo

Minnie Mouse fabric for lining

Striped lining

More details about my retreat, as well as making the candy bags, to come.

This week I will continue working on the Africa Hope quilt.

What are your quilting plans this week? Please leave a comment about them. I'd love to hear what you're working on.

Centers of Bright Hopes blocks for Africa Hope quilt

I have no progress to report since Wednesday. It was a busy weekend, what with watching one or both of my granddaughters on two occasions, attending Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild meeting and going to see Cirque du Soleil: Dralion.

I happen to be on vacation this week and today I just kicked back since I had nothing scheduled. I got caught up on bookkeeping, mostly. Tomorrow I am off to Pacifica for my yearly quilting retreat by the sea. I'll continue and hopefully finish my way through the book Quilters Playtime by Dianne S. Hire, which I've been working through for the past couple of years during my retreats.

I hope to post photos via Instagram or Flickr during my time in Pacifica. It rained in my area today, and I may see rain during my trip. But I'll have a good time, anyway.

What are you working on this week? Please let me know in a comment. I'd love to hear about it.

Pacific International Quilt Show 2012

A week ago Friday I went to Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA. This year I traveled alone, as two friends that I invited were unable to come with me. As usual, I took the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) train. The nearest station is about 20 minutes drive from my home, and an hour and half ride to Santa Clara.

Great America station - Quilt show is a short walk from here.

The building in the center background is where the quilt show is held.

Interesting. This wasn't here last year.

Sidewalks were closed, had to take a detour. Sign says Future Home of The San Francisco 49ers. Oh, that's what that big building is.

Here's the view looking back toward the station.

Had breakfast at the adjoining hotel, a tradition, then headed to the quilt show.
First thing, I located fellow Sacramento Quilt Guild Member Cytel S.'s quilt in the New Quilts of Northern California exhibit. I took a photo, but I'm not showing it, as she hasn't posted it yet herself. Kind of a respect thing. The quilt is beautiful, and I'm so proud to know she had a quilt in the show.

Below are some of quilts that caught my eye:

This one was different, in that it was stitched accordion-style.

My granddaughters would like this one.

Picasso-inspired

Hundreds of buttons make up this quilt.

For lunch I met up with another fellow Sacramento Quilt Guild Member, Leigh B. After lunch, we visited Cytel's quilt together, then parted ways. It was great to spend part of my time with Leigh.

In the Wearable Art exhibit: Marie Antoinette - costume is made up of sugar packaging.

More quilts:

Love how the sailboats are similar yet different. Lots of repetition.

Here are some vendor's quilts that I liked:

Amazingly, despite the many vendors and their wares, I bought nothing. I had been in search of a travel-themed fabric but found none that spoke to me. I had a good time, and I'm looking forward to going again next year.
