Quilt Completed; Rose Quilt Update

Last week I finished a quilt for a local girl scout troop. The girls chose and arranged the fabrics, all of which have meaning. Co-worker and one of the troop leaders Liz M. sewed the squares together. I added the pink border and finished the quilt. The quilt will be donated to the incoming troop leader.

I recognize a few music fabrics from my stash, which I offered to the troop to use in the quilt.

First rose block assembled. Will be trimmed to 12.5" square (unfinished).

Progress has still been slow on the rose quilt. Last night I assembled the first rose block. Tonight I began assembling the leaf sections of the last two blocks. I hope to get all three rose blocks finished this week.

As I mentioned before, I decided not to make six more rose blocks. Here is the new design:

I chose the Turnstile block because it is relatively simple, and has triangles like the rose block. Ordinarily the triangles go out to the edge of the block, but I allowed more white space, in order to let the roses stand out.

Make It Monday - First Rose Block Nearly Done

Tonight I assembled the leaf sections for one rose block, trimmed the edges that will be sewn together, and laid out the block sections on the design wall. It's looking good so far.

It wouldn't take much to finish the leaf sections for the other two rose centers. However, I've spent a lot of time on the centers, and I just don't know that I want to make six more from scratch. That said, I will probably change the design, using the three roses that are almost finished, then fill in the other six spaces with another design. I'm thinking some sort of red triangles, possibly a sort of Harlequin shape. I want the roses to stand out, so I plan to keep the six "new" blocks pretty simple. I'll come up with something.

Make It Monday - Rose Quilt Progress

I've been working on the first set of paper pieced rose blocks. Here is one of the three nearly identical blocks of the set. I'm about a third of the way around the largest section. There are three different reds in each rose block. I think I'll really start to enjoy the look when this first set is done.

Make It Monday - Superman Blocks Finished

I finished the last of the Superman blocks tonight. 

The blocks are made partly from scraps leftover from two earlier Superman quilts. I'll probably sew the blocks together tomorrow night. The quilt will be given to a local agency that helps kids and adults who have been abused.

Make It Monday - Rabbits and Flowers Quilt Finish

Last night I finished Rabbits and Flowers, a quilt for co-worker Kristina R. Today was her last day at the office, as she and her family are moving out of the area. I found out about a week ago that she was leaving, and I decided to make her a quilt. My spy told me that Kristina likes rabbits, and when I did some spying of my own, I noticed a couple of personal items in purple.

Theme fabrics had been in my stash for years. I don't think they are from the same line of fabrics, but they work well together. Rabbit squares are fussy-cut.

I was able to get 12 fussy-cut squares in the rabbit fabric.

I got 9 squares from the floral. Trying a layout.

This was my favorite. The diamond shape seemed to add some movement.

I gave the quilt to Kristina this afternoon. She was surprised and happy to get a quilt. Her mom happens to work in the office and I invited her to the presentation, which made it a little more special.

Make It Monday 6/30/2014

Fabrics for Superman quilt

Each column plus Superman print on bottom will make 5 scrappy blocks

Cut Superman print 13" square, set aside for later

None of the second Superman print was 13" square. I'd have to layer scraps. Here I've cut the largest piece 13" wide and a little shy of 13" tall.

Second scrap - more than 5" tall and more than 6.5" wide.

Third scrap - same as above

There are areas of overlap, which will be resolved in cutting later.

This is probably the fourth layer. Having to do some overlapping again.

Brought back the Superman square, placed on top.

First cut, through all 5+ layers.

Third cut - added since last blog post. It makes the overall design seem more complicated, eliminates the need to trim a 1/2" from the edge of a long strip.

Next I went through each stack, removing the "waste" strips.

Here they are for this first set of blocks.

Once I removed all of the waste strips, I re-organized the sections Stack the Deck style so that there was a variety of fabrics in each block, with no exact repeats.

There are three more sets of five blocks to go. I should have them finished by the weekend.

Fabrics leftover from two Superman quilts

Beginnings of a charity quilt

I don't have a quilt due for a while, which is unusual for me. I made a list of different projects that I could work on, mostly scraps from earlier quilts. I typed the list onto the List Randomizer at Random.org, thenhit the randomize button a few times to really mix up the list. The project at the top was Echo - Superman. Echo quilts are my term for quilts made mostly from leftovers of previous quilts. Echo quilts usually are made for charity, like this Superman quilt will be.

The fabrics are leftover from two Superman quilts: Superman and Superman Opus No. 2 in A Double Flat Minor. I'm going to combine the fabrics to make one new quilt.

I haven't decided on a quilt pattern yet, but I'm leaning strongly toward a Turning Twenty variation, which I've used several times in the past. I'll probably add some other fabrics, like navy.

I'll begin working on the quilt in the next couple of days.

I'm just starting to work on a quilt for retiring co-worker Sherrie S., who likes cats and purple.

I found this cute fabric online. It combines cats and purple pretty well.

The lavender is from stash. There were two bundles of it, which looked very much alike. I compared the color dots on the selvage and they seem to be the same. I'm saying they are. Neither bundle was enough to create the design below, but between the two, there's plenty. Woo-hoo!

Large squares in purple/multi-colors represent the cat theme print.

The central white square won't actually be white. I plan to use a dark purple background and applique one of the cat figures to it.

TC's Christmas

I made this little quilt in July 2012. When Sherrie saw it on display at my desk, she told me she wanted one like it, but as a cat. The dog above is a variation of Dazzling Dog by Amy Bradley. Amy has cat designs, too, and I had chosen one for Sherrie's quilt. But now that I have the purple cat fabric, I'm going to try to re-create one of the cats on it.

This is the cat I chose. Isn't he fun?

Here's an idea of how the 8" finished square will look.

Although Sherrie is retiring near the end of March, I plan to get her quilt done and delivered a few weeks early, more in line with her birthday.
