Here's this week's question:
Tell us about your sewing friends. Have your fabric tastes changed by having friends who like to sew? Do you like the same things or are you completely opposite?
When I first started quilting, some 20 plus years ago, I was a traditional quilter who used traditional fabrics like calicoes. I didn't have quilting friends back then, but as I found a couple of them, they were traditional quilters who used traditional fabrics, also. A few years later, I formed and managed a group of online quilting friends who did challenges together, swapping fat quarters to make our quilts. From that experience I began to appreciate other fabric styles, such as batiks and novelty prints. Even now nearly every quilt I make begins with a novelty print.
A few years ago I joined a quilt guild for the first time, the Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild. I chose a modern guild because it seemed to be a no-rules kind of group. I tend to be somewhat of a rebel, inventing my own quilting methods, and felt that I would be, and have been, accepted the way I am - not chastised for doing things the "wrong" way. Although my style and palette are not usually of the modern aesthetic, lately I have been influenced to try grays in my quilts, which is directly attributable to the friends I've made through the guild.

DeleteI think it is nice that your guild accepts everyone, regardless of their style. The Chicago Modern Quite Guild, of which I am a member, is also like that and I think it is great. I love seeing the many different kinds of quilts our members make, from traditional to modern and in between. I think you can find inspiration in every quilt.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to feel accepted. I feel very comfortable sharing in my group. The members seem interested in my kooky ideas, which gives me confidence to put myself out there. I look forward to each meeting.
DeleteI have always loved scrap quilts -- probably because that is what I grew up with. I even had 4 scrap quilts given to us for wedding gifts -- two were made from my mother's scraps, so I know what garments were made from many of the fabrics. But I think the internet and reading blogs has broadened my visions. Some of the modern quilts that I see really attract me. We will be moving to another state in a few months and would love to become part of a group such as yours:)

Wherever you're moving to, hopefully you can find a modern guild fairly close by. I drive about an hour to Sacramento for our monthly meetings. I drive farther than anyone else but it's worth the trip. I look forward to seeing my friends and sharing my projects.
