San Francisco: February 2004

Making the city-themed travel quilt reminds me of a trip I took years ago. It was early 2004, almost exactly this time in February. I was going through a divorce after a long marriage, and during the first year travel was my therapy, especially during the holidays. I'd already been to Reno for Christmas - a last-minute trip to avoid dealing with a big, empty house for the first time in 23 years. So for President's Day weekend, which included what could have been a very sad Valentine's Day, I took Amtrak to San Francisco and spent three fun-packed and adventurous days seeing many sights, all by public transportation or on foot.

Before I left home I put together a list of 21 places I wanted to visit in San Francisco. Mind you, this wasn't my first time there. Only a couple of hours from home, I'd been there many times. I'd done the Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 thing on many occasions, so I didn't bother for this trip. I wanted to go to new places. And I did. I visited all 21 spots on the list. A few of the places I stayed only a few minutes, but I can say I went.

Here are the places I can remember:
Black Cat Quilt Shop
Lori's Diner (multiple times)
Live show in a tiny theater in the Union Square area where I was staying
Border's bookstore
French cafe near Chinatown
Chinatown walking tour
Museum of Modern Art
Yerba Buena Gardens
North Beach
City Lights bookstore
Another bookstore near City Hall (Did I mention that I like bookstores?)
Sutro Baths
Cliff House
Pier 23 Cafe - music was really loud so I didn't go in

That doesn't total 21 items, so obviously I've forgotten some. But I had a great time. I enjoy San Francisco, with so many places to see and things to do. I'm fortunate to live so close to a great city.

  1. No matter how often I go, I always take in Ghiradelli Square! Can't resist the chocolate. =)

    1. Hi, desertskyquilts. Ghirardelli Square, near Fisherman's Wharf. Haven't been there in a long time. But chocolate isn't my thing. Weird, I know. :) I try to get to Britex fabrics in Union Square when I go to San Francisco, but if I'm with a non-sewer I usually spare them the agony. I could stay there for hours.
