No Contest

I tried out the blue and gold metallic threads on a scrap piece of background. The blue is on the left half of the sample above. It is subtle, but nearly invisible. That might not be a bad idea for a beginning machine quilter like myself, as it would hide mistakes. But the right half with the gold has so much sparkle and life, that I've got to use it. The sparkle really reminds me of fireworks in the sky.

I know I'll have lots of obvious stumbles and bumbles in the freemotion quilting, but as I told myself at the store when I went back and forth on the gold: Go Big or Go Home.

I won't do any more work tonight, but I'll probably start quilting the real piece tomorrow.

  2. Love the metallic, it will look great. I do a lot of curves and loops. It was the only thing I could do for a long time on free motion. I made "quilts" for the first Christmas after buying the long-arm, and my daughter looked at hers and said - I'm so glad I got the loops - I love that pattern the best. Your's looks fine, watch your tension, and go for it!!!

  4. You are so right that the gold just sparkles! Beautiful! One thing you might want to consider on your freemotion quilting is to quilt fireworks. I think I have a photo of some freemotion quilted (I didn't do it, just took photos of gorgeous quilting). Here is one idea - you will have to scroll down some - http://crossroadsquilts.wordpress.com/2009/03/28/gallery-of-carol-doaks-quilts-on-display/

This one is not the one I was thinking of though. When I have time later today I will look through my photos to see if I can find it for you.

  5. "I told you so!" I loved the gold when you showed it to me. Go for it! Hey, I went for it on my capris and curtains and you know you have WAY more experience at sewing than I do.
