Fabric has been in stash for at least nine years.

Found this great greeting card with a motorcycle jacket with working zippers.

Tag says "Happy Birthday, Rebel."

Made a quilt sandwich with same theme print on the back.

Sewed about 1/2" inside the edge.

Trimmed to about 1/4" from sewn line, zigzagged on edge.

Did some free-motion quilting, kind of outlining the bikes.

Map is a piece of scrapbook paper. While figuring out placement of the jacket, noticed the words Clarksburg and Washington on the map. Clarksburg is the street we lived on for 23 years and where daughter Lisa grew up. Lisa lived in the state of Washington twice. Wow! I made sure the words were prominent in the final product.

Using tape to keep the jacket in place for sewing. Should mention that I used double-stick tape under the shoulders, neck and tabs at the waist. I didn't want to stitch over those areas. Hopefully the tape will hold.

I stopped here for the night, later working on the piece on the train to San Diego to visit my daughter. I sewed on red buttons and silver snaps on the train, getting most of them done before I arrived in San Diego. I presented the unfinished piece to Lisa at her birthday party, then finished it a couple of days later - adding the remaining buttons, snaps, as well as chain (in two corners).

The print was so cute and I wanted Lisa to be able to see all of the motifs, some of which were covered by the jacket and/or map on the front.

Lisa loved the quilt. She'll probably display it at home. Enjoy, Sweetie!

Motorcycle Bulldogs Pillowcase

Motorcycle Bulldogs fabric from stash. Has been there for many years.

Decided to make a pillowcase for daughter Lisa's birthday. She rides a motorcycle.

I gave the pillowcase to my daughter Lisa last weekend when I visited her in San Diego for her 30th birthday. She loved the pillowcase. I hope it brings her many nice dreams.

Artist Trading Cards Done

The first one I made. Angular machine quilting, gold and green beads. Used black on the back before I found out I needed to put my name, etc. Added an off-white label, wrote info.

Leftovers from the first ATC. Zigzag stitching around red fabric, gold triangles on black, then added interior gold lines. Had to add label to this one, too, because it had black backing.

Probably my favorite. There wasn't enough of this scrap to cover the front, so I added black. The edge between the print and the black is raw. Gold stitching. Used yellow for the back, so was able to write without adding a label.

Very purple. I had the buttons and ribbon already. Glitter on the buttons likes to come off, so I'm keeping this ATC in a little zip bag in hopes that the other three won't get glitter on them.

Tomorrow is the Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild meeting...in Nevada City, about 2.5 hours away. I'm hoping to go, but it's such a long drive. If I can't catch a ride with another member, I may not go. But if I make the trip, I'll share the ATCs with the group, then mail to my swap partner by Monday.

Well, What Do You Know?

Artist Trading Cards for a swap

A couple of days ago I posted that I hadn't done any quilting during the previous week. When I went into the sewing room last night, I found a messy table and four ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) that I had worked on and forgotten all about. How funny! The ATCs are for a swap through QuiltingGallery.com. The fabrics and embellishments are all from stash and scraps. The cards were quick to make and pretty fun.The bottom two cards feel done. The top two need some embellishment, which can be seen on or near the cards.

Today I'm taking the train to San Diego to visit my daughter Lisa for a few days. I'll try to finish up the ATCs during the trip.

This likely will be my last post for a bit. I'll have my smartphone but I'm not taking my laptop. See you when I get back!

Railroad Crossing

Well, I didn't do any quilting this past week. I have no pressing quilt deadlines, so I've spent the week catching up on bookkeeping and getting ready for a trip to San Diego to visit my daughter Lisa, who moved back there from another state on Christmas Day. As I was trying to figure out when to go see her, I thought I should go for her birthday. Then I remembered it was her 30th birthday. Even better! So on Friday I'll take the train for the all-day trip. Once in San Diego, I'll catch a short bus ride to the airport and rent a car. I often use public transportation when I visit big cities, and I've done it many times in San Diego. Lisa has a motorcycle and a very unreliable car. I don't mind riding the motorcycle for short distances, but to to make things easier for us to go places together, I'm renting a car. Have Smartphone with GPS, will travel.

Lisa will be working a few of the days, and to help pass the time, I'll work on a quilt. I'll bring my little sewing machine, tools and fabric - just as I do for my quilting retreats in Pacifica. The motel where Lisa and I will stay has an iron and ironing board that I can borrow, so I won't have to pack an iron. Even so, you'd be amazed at what I can fit into a suitcase.

I've been trying to figure out which project I should work on during the trip. It dawned on me today to tackle a WHIMM (Work Hidden in my Mind) that is at least 9 years old. It is called Railroad Crossing, and uses blocks by the same name. (Please see the photo at the top of this post.)

Photos were taken during a 2008 San Diego vacation with daughter Lisa, who was living in another state at the time.

On several trips to San Diego I stayed in one particular motel that was right next to a trolley stop. While Lisa was at work, I'd spend most of the day in my room working on a quilt. The trolleys come every 14 minutes, at least they did at the time. But they travel in both directions, so on average, a trolley arrives every seven minutes. And every seven minutes (or so) the warning bells at the railroad crossing go off. The trolleys run just a few hours short of 24 hours per day. I heard a LOT of bells.

And so was born the idea to make a Railroad Crossing quilt. I'd like to try to use the relative dimensions of the trolley cars for the strips in the quilt, which probably won't be the dimensions of the traditional block, but it's my quilt and I can do whatever I like. Yes, I'm a rebel.

I haven't figured out exactly what the color scheme will be, but tonight I picked up a dark red solid for background - referring to the red trolley cars - and I'll go through my scraps to see which ones want to be in the quilt.

I'll leave for San Diego on Friday, arriving at dinner time. My daughter, myself, San Diego friend Patty L. and "a small army" of Lisa's friends will go out for lunch on Saturday, Lisa's actual birthday. Then the plan is to see Snow White at the theater. Other items on the agenda for the five-day visit: Rosie's Calico Cottage, Quilter's Choice, Visions Art Museum, Valley View Casino to take a look at a 35-foot long aquarium as seen on Animal Planet's Tanked, Imperial Beach to try to find the place where my parents were living when I was born (address is on my birth certificate), Hodad's Burgers as well as a spicy food restaurant - both seen on Food Network, and Panera to spend my birthday gift card. Of course, we must go to the beach every day. Who knows what other trouble we might get into?

I know I'll have a great time with Lisa. She and I laugh a lot when we get together. I'm looking forward to five wonderful days with her.

This week I finished and delivered a fundraiser quilt to benefit a Relay for Life team in my office. The quilt was paid for last week with a $100 donation, sight unseen, before I finished the quilt or showed it to anyone. I knew nothing about the pre-purchase until after I had given the quilt to the team's fundraising coordinator, who didn't want to say anything to me ahead of time, in order not to influence my creativity. The funny thing is, I spoke to the buyer of the quilt last week, discussing how the color scheme had changed. She told me that whatever I made would be beautiful. She gave no clue that she had already planned to buy the quilt. Wow!

There's more to the story. As I was running out of time to finish the quilt on Monday, the quilt became smaller than originally planned. I ended up leaving off four rows of checkerboard and the border. I felt badly that the quilt was going to be so small, but I began to get the hunch that  maybe whoever got the quilt needed it to be small - lap size rather than my usual throw size. Get this, as it turns out, the quilt is going to be given to a 14-month-old little girl. At 48" square, the quilt is just the right size. Amazing!

As for future quilts, I have nothing pressing right now. It happens now and then, and I've spent the last couple of days going through papers and planning a vacation to visit my daughter Lisa in San Diego. My tentative quilting plans for the next few weeks:
- Make a couple more Echoes quilts for the Redwood Center. I purchased background fabric months ago to go with leftovers from A Study in Stripes and Cristine's Bosties.
- I am participating in a trade for ATCs (artist trading cards), which must be mailed by the end of June.
- I'd like to finish up a Fourth of July wallhanging; the quilt top has been sitting in my closet for nine years or more. Yes, I do have a handful of UFOs.
- I have a shirt that has been waiting for months to be cut out and sewn together.
- I'd like to make another mixed media wallhanging. I have a couple of greeting cards that would be good starts.

We'll see what this next week brings. Hopefully I'll be working on something again.

Cadenza

On Sunday night I finished Cadenza, a music themed quilt for co-worker, Facebook friend and fellow musician Ramin T., who plays the violin. The squarish shapes against the off-white background represent music notes dancing across a page. I included several music-themed fabrics, as well as coffee fabric and Roman numerals for Starbucks fan Ramin, who works in the accounting unit of the office.

I post photos and status updates about my quilts on Facebook, and it was fun to make the quilt right in front of Ramin. When I presented the quilt on Monday he was so surprised. He knew about the quilt but had no clue that it was for him. He assumed it was for some other musician friend of mine. I am so sneaky.

Two different white-on-white prints, in case I run out of one.

Divided the quilt into 4x4 "checkerboards". Found that there were three different blocks, labeled them A, B and C. Also there are a couple of extra rows at the top and bottom of the quilt to give more length. I labeled those strips W, X, Y and Z.

Last night I finished Cadenza and delivered it today to co-worker, Facebook friend and fellow musician Ramin T. I post photos and status updates to Facebook about my quilts as I go, and it was fun to make the quilt right in front of Ramin without him knowing that the quilt was for him.

I really like how the quilt turned out and I hope Ramin enjoys it for a long time.

Needed to figure out where to place tied knots. Found the pattern repeat on leftover fabric, marked knot placement with flower head pins (big yellow spots). Pinned "map" to design wall for reference while I tied.

I made Fishing in a hurry, in under a week. I have had the theme fabric in my stash for years. I really like how the quilt turned out.

I didn't make much progress on Cadenza this week. I sewed the backing, then put the quilt on hold to work on Fishing, which I think was wise. Tonight I'll proceed with the pillowcase finish, and get the quilt completed for Saturday's Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild meeting.

For the past few days I've been working on Fishing, a fundraiser quilt for my daughter-in-law Laurie's Mothers of Preschoolers group at church. I'm hoping the quilt will have appeal as a Father's Day gift and bring a good bit of money in the raffle.

The center of the quilt is one large piece of fishing/outdoorsy themed fabric from stash, surrounded by a checkerboard border. A thin red border adds an accent and separates the dark green border from the same green that is in the checkerboard. I didn't want the greens to form a pattern that creates a dentil (toothlike) effect.

I'm doing a pillowcase finish for the quilt, and tonight I got the layers sewn together, leaving a space unsewn for turning. Tomorrow night I'll turn the quilt right side out, topstitch around the edges to close the opening. After that I'll tie dozens of knots with embroidery floss, and the quilt will be done.

Cadenza Quilt Top

Last night I attached a border of black treble clef fabric. I love how the quilt looks, with the contrast between the off-white and black, the black strips between the four-patch and theme blocks, and the whimsy of the dancing music notes. I should have the quilt done by the end of the weekend.

After that, I'm doing a quick charity quilt, based on a fishing-themed fabric I bought years ago. The quilt will be part of a raffle for my daughter-in-law Laurie's mothers group at church. I'm hoping it will be appealing as a Father's Day gift for a husband, father, etc.
